Well, these are my reviews.
I tried to keep them short and sweet. DVDs not found here may be in the Coming Soon section. If you have any questions about any of my reviews or have found a DVD that's not on this site, please tell me about it by sending an email from the Home page.

The Andy Griffith Show (Volume 1)
Front Row Entertainment 3557
Episodes (4): Aunt Bee's Medicine Man, The Rivals, The Big House, A Wife For Andy
Extras: Andy Griffith biography (text)
The sound and picture quality are very good. However, there is a scratch on the print of The Big House for a short period of time. All of the episodes are complete and uncut and contain the original theme music. This is a very good TAGS DVD because of it's simplicity. Good quality, full length episodes without the distraction of company logos or re-recorded music.

The Andy Griffith Show (Volume 2)
Front Row Entertainment 3562
Episodes (4): Dogs, Dogs, Dogs, Barney's First Car, The Darlings Are Coming, The Great Filling Station Robbery
Extras: Don Knotts biography (text)
The sound and picture quality are very good. All of the episodes are complete and uncut and contain the original theme music. This is another great DVD because of it's simplicity. Good quality, full length episodes without the distraction of company logos or re-recorded music. Let's hope Front Row decides to release a third and fourth volume sometime soon.

The Andy Griffith Show The Best of Barney Special Edition
Sterling Entertainment Group 40157
Episodes (8): High Noon in Mayberry, The Great Filling Station Robbery, The Rivals, Dogs Dogs Dogs, The Loaded Goat, Barney's First Car, A Wife For Andy, The Big House
Extras: Mayberry Music Videos Original Broadcast Information Art Gallery Miss Crump's Pop Quiz Tidbits (show trivia) Don Knotts Fimography and Awards List
If we were to judge on sound and picture quality alone, this disc would beat them all. It looks almost as good as what we would see on TV Land. Unfortunately, only one episode is full length (The Loaded Goat) and the original theme music has been replaced with an annoying electronic tune. Still, the company decided to add some extras that are kind of fun. Too bad most of the shows are edited or this would be an awesome DVD. |
The Andy Griffith Show The Best of The Andy Griffith Show
Sterling Entertainment Group 40124
Episodes (8): Class Reunion, Opie and the Spoiled Kid, Aunt Bee's Medicine Man, Andy's English Valet, Rafe Hollister Sings, Andy Discovers America, The Darlings Are Coming, Mountain Wedding
Extras: Mayberry Music Videos Original Broadcast Information Art Gallery Aunt Bee's Secret Family Recipes Tidbits (show trivia) Andy Griffith Biography (text)
Just like the DVD above, this one sports great sound and picture quality, but only two episodes are uncut (Mountain Wedding, Aunt Bee's Medicine Man) and the original music has been replaced. The Secret Family Recipes pages were a nice touch. Like before, this would be a superior disc if the shows were not edited.

The Andy Griffith Show
Diamond Entertainment 98304
Episodes (4): Rafe Hollister Sings, Class Reunion**, Andy Discovers America, Aunt Bee's Medicine Man
Extras: Fun Facts (text)
The video and sound quality are very good on this disc. I found that these are the same prints used by LaserLight (below), but the video transfer is a lot better with no translucent logo in the bottom right corner of the screen to distract you. All of the episodes are complete and uncut. The opening/ closing theme music is used and, like the LaserLight DVD, is a new recording of the original tune.
**Note: There is an error on the packaging. The episode listed as "Class Reunion" is "Opie and the Spoiled Kid" on the DVD. |
The Andy Griffith Show Volume 1
Madacy Entertainment DVD9 9270-1
Episodes (5): High Noon In Mayberry, The Loaded Goat, The Big House, A Wife For Andy, Andy Discovers America
Extras: Trivia Quiz Show biography (text)
Compared to the other DVDs, this disc has a slightly darker and grainier picture. Madacy seems to be using the same film prints as Front Row because the exact same scratch in that company's "The Big House" episode can be seen on this DVD. Audio is fine. All episodes are complete and uncut, but the original theme music has been replaced with a completely different tune.

The Andy Griffith Show Volume 2
Madacy Entertainment DVD9 9270-2
Episodes (5): Andy's English Valet, Mountain Wedding, Opie and the Spoiled Kid, Rafe Hollister Sings, Class Reunion
Extras: Trivia Quiz Ron Howard biography (text)
Like Volume 1 of the set, this disc has a slightly dark and grainy picture. The audio is good. All episodes except one are complete and uncut, but the original theme music has been replaced with a completely different tune. The major flaw with this disc is that the episode "Andy's English Valet" runs a mere 16 minutes because the reel for the second act was left out. Doesn't anyone check these things? |
Classic TV Comedies Collector's Edition
Diamond Entertainment 98909
Episodes (2): Barney's First Car, High Noon in Mayberry
Extras: Facts & Trivia (text) Show Information (text) Photo Gallery
Also includes various episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show, Petticoat Junction, The Lucy Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.
Sound and picture quality is very good. The prints seem to be the same as the LaserLight release, but the transfer is a little better. Both episodes are uncut and the music has been replaced with a re-recording of the original theme music. There are some nice shots in the Photo Gallery. This is a great set considering you get about 7 hours of classic TV. The quality of the other shows varies and may be reviewed elsewhere on this sight in the future.

The Andy Griffith Show Classic Favorites Special Edition (Volume 1)
LaserLight DVD/ Delta Entertainment 82 044
Episodes (6): High Noon In Mayberry, The Big House, A Wife For Andy, Mountain Wedding, Opie and the Spoiled Kid, Rafe Hollister Sings
Extras: none
The sound on this disc is good, but the picture is a bit too light somtimes. All of the episodes are complete and uncut. There is a small, translucent logo that appears in the bottom right corner of the picture for a few seconds 2 to 3 times per episode. The opening/ closing theme music is used, but it is a new recording and not from the original film print. Even with its somewhat washed out picture, this is still one of the best overall discs out there.
Two more volumes from LaserLight containing 8 additional public domain episodes can be found on DVD Reviews Page 2. |
